The Station Street regeneration works which started at the end of March 2020 have now been completed.
Despite the ongoing pandemic Amey Highways were able to continue working throughout the lockdown to try and limit disruption to the local businesses and to ensure the works programme was able to be completed on time.
Cllr George Allen, Deputy Leader for Planning Policy, Regeneration and Business Support at East Staffordshire Borough Council said: “When the Government announced the lockdown restrictions right at the start of the works process there was a real risk that the delivery timeframe would be affected. We are extremely pleased to be able to announce that the work has now been completed. We would like to thank the public and local businesses for their support whilst this work has taken place.
“The positive partnership working that has occurred over the past few years between the Borough and County Councils to bring this project to fruition clearly works well and is delivering for residents in Burton. I am sure people will agree that the final result provides a high quality design and finish that will encourage more footfall to the area”.
Philip White Deputy Leader of Staffordshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills said: “The Station Street project is important to Burton town centre’s ongoing regeneration and is a real success story in terms of the County and Borough councils working together for the community.
“The project team managed to continue its work safely through the lockdown period to ensure it has been completed on time.
“Town centres are transforming and the Covid-19 pandemic has hastened the need for us to work collaboratively on their future vision. It is essential to both councils that Burton town centre is vibrant, and we want to enhance its reputation as a great place to visit, work and live.”
This positive working partnership between the two authorities is set to continue as the County Council prepares for the continuation of these regeneration works onto High Street following the successful application for £750,000 of accelerated funding, awarded as part of the Stronger Towns fund.
